Benjie Linkous, PE, LEED AP

PRESIDENT / ceo / electrical engineer

Benjie joined the firm after graduating from Virginia Tech and has dedicated his career to public facilities design and construction.  A registered Professional Engineer by trade, he became a director in the firm and continued to his current position, serving the firm as President and CEO.  He works with numerous Owner and Architectural clients in the mid-Atlantic region, establishing relationships and seeing projects to fruition.  Benjie enjoys all aspects of the engineering process from the early inception of projects to opening day, meeting and engaging with clients, and working with other highly qualified staff to determine the best engineered solutions possible.  As a designer, he specializes in electrical design, including distribution, lighting, low-voltage systems, and safety and security systems.  Leading in energy efficient design practices and sustainable strategies is also a passion of his to ensure the firm continues to help set the standard in these arenas.  More than anything, though, he enjoys helping others not only achieve, but exceed their expectations, dreams, and aspirations.

 

Randy Daniels

VP OF OPERATIONS / PLUMBING & FP DESIGNER

Randy leads our Roanoke office as Vice President of Operations and has been a member of the Ascent team for over three decades. He leads design and management for the plumbing and fire protection design department and provides leadership for our construction administration effort . Experienced in all engineering disciplines, Randy has responsibility for all aspects of project execution from project procurement, design and through construction administration. He has deep experience serving both private and public clients, meeting complex and comprehensive regulatory and review processes, including BCOM, with an emphasis on constructibility.

Mike Sowick, PE

Vice-president / mechanical engineer

Mike serves as our Vice President with emphasis on Engineering Design, Project Management, and Quality Control.  He has been a member of our team since 2001 and has served on the firm’s Board of Directors since 2003.  With over twenty-two (22) years of experience with direct Owner-client sales, Mike specializes in developing constructible solutions for existing MEP systems renovation/rehabilitation work. His experience includes direct responsible design of central boiler and chiller plants, steam/hydronic systems, custom air handling equipment, building automation and control systems.  Mike realizes prescribed solutions are generally not the most effective approach for addressing malfunctioning, antiquated MEP systems, and each project requires a distinct, engineered solution, with emphasis on construction schedule/cost control.

Mike is a licensed Professional Engineer in Virginia and Maryland and is a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).

 

Dave Roller, PE, LEED AP, CEM, GBE

Treasurer/CFO/mechanical Engineer

David serves on the Board of Directors and as Mechanical Department Head for the firm.  He has been a member of our team since 2000 and has experience across multiple project types as well as a large variety of mechanical system types.  His specialties include green building and high performance design, central plant systems, hydronic systems, energy modeling, and construction administration. As a director in the firm, David also serves as the primary contact for several architectural and owner clients and helps in developing and maintaining these long-lasting relationships.  Additionally, David shares his talent in overseeing and helping direct the financial aspect of the firm.  David is a graduate of Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.

David is a licensed Professional Engineer in Virginia, North Carolina, and Maryland; holds certifications as a LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP), Certified Energy Manager (CEM), and Green Building Engineer (GBE), and is a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).

Boyd Headley, PE, LEED AP

Boyd has worked in the engineering industry since 1980, joining Ascent in 1983.  He is a licensed Professional Engineer, a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), and a LEED Accredited Professional.  Boyd established our Commissioning Department in 2004 and has been the lead agent on each of Ascent’s commissioning projects.  He has extensive experience with quality processes. Boyd’s specialties include HVAC Design Engineering, Energy Management, Controls, Commissioning, Project Management, and Construction Administration.  Boyd is the firm’s most experienced mechanical engineer and brings a wealth of knowledge to the firm as a whole.  His experience and engineering expertise is desired by numerous architectural and owner clients.

 

Sean Mallahan, PE, LEED AP

bim manager / mechanical engineer

Sean has been a member of the Ascent team for over a decade and started in the CAD department before becoming a Mechanical Engineer. He is the lead designer and project manager for many commercial and educational projects. As a licensed engineer in Virginia and Maryland, Sean’s responsibilities include all aspects of project implementation from Pre-Design and Design through Construction Administration. With a personal involvement in many LEED Certified buildings, he also helps lead the firm in the green building industry and LEED certification process. Sean is also the Building Information Modeling (BIM) Manager and oversees all aspects of the firm’s implementation of BIM.  Sean is a graduate of Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.

Randy Spencer, PE, RCDD

information technology department head / electrical engineer

Randy has been a member of our team since 1993 and serves as our Information Technology Department Head.  His experience spreads across multiple project types along with a large variety of electrical systems such as lighting, data, networks and communication, media, alarm, security monitoring, access control, power generation (solar and generators), static UPS equipment, energy efficient designs, and construction administration.  Randy is the firm’s most experienced electrical engineer and has been involved on projects of many varying types throughout his career.

Randy graduated in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science degree from Old Dominion University in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.He is a licensed Professional Engineer in Virginia; holds credentials as a Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) and is a long standing member of IEEE.
